Greyling was the son of Ferdinand Jacobus Greyling and his wife, Jacomina Nicolasina Heyneman. After the family had moved south, to Cape Town, he began his dance studies at the age of 12 with Jennifer Louw, subsequently enrolling at the University of Cape Town Ballet School for advanced training.
