preferred South Sudanese independence over replacing the Islamist Khartoum regime. Following the death of Dr. Garang and independence it would seem as though the SPLM is socially conservative from a Christian perspective (homosexuality is a criminal offence, etc.) and possibly Dinka tribalist, but beyond that it is very difficult to define the party and government ideologically. Do they remain committed to socialism? Do they see themselves as Left or Right? It would be interesting to hear a summary of their ideology as it stands now from someone in the know.
