This led to a loosening of traditional roles for women, and also meant that more women were able to inherit property along "the Street," Deerfield's main street filled with stately 18th century houses. Besides long-time residents of the town, middle and upper-class urban women began to buy and restore homes, some for summer use, along "the Street" in the 1880s and 1890s. By the beginning of the 20th century, about one third of the houses on "the Street" were owned by women. These houses had parlors which they converted into work spaces and salesrooms as they began to embrace the Arts & Crafts movement.
