The street was named after Joshua Dawson, who in 1705 acquired land from Henry Temple and Hugh Price. He laid out the street in 1707 along the estate's east edge, as well as the nearby Grafton, Anne, and Harry Streets which were part of the estate. By 1728, the street was complete. At the point of
